GFA Slams Racist Abuse of Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo
Accra, Ghana - August 17, 2025 - The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo during their Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield. In a statement released on Sunday, August 17, 2025, the GFA described the incident as "deeply concerning" and emphasized that racism has no place in football or society.
The abuse occurred on Friday night when Semenyo was subjected to racist taunts from a spectator. The match was temporarily stopped by referee Anthony Taylor after Semenyo reported the incident, and the fan was promptly removed from the stadium by police officers on duty. Despite the provocation, Semenyo showed remarkable restraint and dignity, scoring two goals for Bournemouth in their 3-1 loss to Liverpool.
The GFA praised Semenyo for his "remarkable response" to the abuse, highlighting his strength of character and commitment to unity over division. "Antoine not only showcased his exceptional talent on the pitch with two goals but also displayed extraordinary maturity and dignity off it," the GFA stated. The association applauded Semenyo for being an outstanding footballer and an inspiring role model.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the football community, with several prominent figures expressing solidarity with Semenyo.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino strongly condemned the abuse, stating that "everyone at FIFA stands firmly with Antoine" and promising support to ensure strong deterrents against racism.
FIFA has reiterated its commitment to eradicating racism and discrimination from football. The organization's Players' Voice Panel, established to address racism, will be in touch with Semenyo to offer support. FIFA President Infantino emphasized that football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination, praising Semenyo's courage and performance on the pitch despite the adversity.
