GPRTU Gives Government Ultimatum to Fix Pokuase-Nsawam Road or Face Sit-Down Strike

Accra, Ghana – 16 August, 2025 – The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has threatened to embark on a sit-down strike over the deplorable state of the Pokuase-Nsawam road, a key highway linking Greater Accra to the Eastern, Ashanti, and northern regions. The union's National Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, stated in an interview with Channel 1 TV ,that the strike would commence on Wednesday, August 21, 2025, unless contractors resume repair works on the road.

The State of the Road

The Pokuase-Nsawam road has deteriorated significantly, causing frustration for drivers and commuters alike. The poor condition of the road has led to increased vehicle maintenance costs, frequent breakdowns, and safety risks for passengers and drivers. Transport operators describe the road as "unmotorable and dangerous," with the GPRTU and other stakeholders calling for urgent repairs.

GPRTU's Demands

The GPRTU has given the government a one-week ultimatum to fix the road, which expires on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The union insists that the only thing that will make them change their minds is seeing contractors back on the road. According to Samuel Amoah, the Minister for Roads and Highways had assured them that repairs would begin within six weeks, but no visible progress has been made.

Impact on Commuters and Economy

The neglect of the Pokuase-Nsawam road has far-reaching implications for commuters and the economy. The road's poor condition has resulted in long travel delays, high repair bills, and discomfort for passengers. Transport operators argue that the road's deterioration is disrupting economic activity and placing undue burdens on commuters.

Call to Action

The GPRTU is calling on residents, commuters, and all affected road users to support their action as part of a broader civic effort to hold the government accountable. The union believes that the government's inaction is unacceptable, and they can no longer tolerate the suffering of their members and the general public.

Possible Consequences

If the strike goes ahead, it could have significant consequences for commuters and the economy. The GPRTU's sit-down strike would mean that commercial vehicles would be parked, disrupting transportation services and impacting businesses that rely on these services.
