Afenyo-Markin to Lead 'Save the Judiciary Demo' on May 5

Accra, Ghana - 29 April, 2025 - Ghana's Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is set to lead a protest against President John Mahama's decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, scheduled for May 5, 2025.
The demonstration, dubbed "Save the Judiciary Demo", highlights growing tensions between the executive and judicial branches of government.
The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo has sparked controversy, with Afenyo-Markin expressing concerns over the implications for Ghana's judiciary. Petitions have been submitted to President Mahama for the removal of the Chief Justice, which Afenyo-Markin describes as "full of flimsy pedestrian excuses" and not grounds enough for her to leave office.
This development comes amid a backdrop of Afenyo-Markin's vocal criticism of the current administration's actions, including the recent revocation of appointments of public servants.
In a letter to President Mahama dated February 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin argued that the terminations contravened foundational legal principles and eroded public trust in state institutions.
Afenyo-Markin's concerns also resonate with his stance on the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Ghana Centre for Democratic Development & Ors. v Attorney General, which reaffirmed that politically motivated removal of public servants violates constitutional principles.
