Mahama vows to review Saglemi Housing deal if he regains presidency
Accra, Ghana - October 22, 2024 - John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to review the Saglemi Housing Project's handover to Quarm-LMI, citing the lack of consultation with the allodial landowners.
Mahama argues that the NDC's initial land acquisition agreement with Ningo-Prampram's traditional authorities should be respected, and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) must follow suit before altering the project's status.
The project, initiated by the NDC, was later abandoned and recently handed over to Quarm-LMI, a private developer, after months of negotiations.
Mahama emphasized the importance of involving the Ningo people in discussions, stating that the land cannot be alienated without their permission and negotiation.
During his Greater Accra campaign stop in Prampram, Mahama assured the crowd that he would address the socioeconomic concerns of the Ningo-Prampram constituency promptly in his next administration.
He criticized the government's handling of the project, emphasizing the need for transparency and cooperation with the local community.
“It was NDC that started the Saglami housing project. We consulted the people of Ningo-Prampram before we started that project. After we left, this government has abandoned it. Recently, I heard they want to give it to private people.
“But the point I am making to them is that if you are changing the status of that project from a government project to a private project, you need to discuss with the allodial owners of the land.
“And so, I know they haven’t done that discussion. You cannot alienate that land by handing that project to a private company without permission and discussion and negotiation with the allodial owners, who are the Ningo people. And so when we come, we are going to review whatever you are [the government is] doing there.”
