State drops charges against seven Democracy Hub protesters

Accra, Ghana -  October 22, 2024 - In a surprise move, the state has dropped charges against seven of the 53 Democracy Hub protesters facing trial. The decision was announced in court after 19 protesters appeared following their release from custody.

Kingsley Adiedu, Seth Cofie, Gloria Louis, Nii Quaye Hammond, Manuel Biney, Joseph Dorsese, and Ernest Acheampong are the seven protesters who have been discharged.

State attorneys cited insufficient evidence, leading to the discontinuation of the trial against the seven. Additional disclosures were filed, and witness statements are expected on the next adjourned date, November 21.

Nicholas Normeshie, counsel for the discharged protesters, expressed satisfaction with the state's decision.

“The state made the right decision to drop the charges against these seven clients, as they were innocent of the accusations. From the state’s position, I highly doubt they will be re-arrested. If that were the case, it would have happened immediately after the court session.''

The remaining protesters will continue to face trial as proceedings unfold.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 21, 2024.
