We Only Have 22 Staff to Manage Almost 6,000 Students - Accra Academy Headmaster Laments

Accra, Ghana - 29 April, 2025 - Accra Academy Senior High School is struggling with rising student indiscipline due to a severe shortage of on-campus staff accommodation according to the school's Headmaster, Emmanuel Ofoe Fiemawhle.
According to him, with approximately 5,000 students, including boarders, the school has only 22 staff members residing on campus to provide supervision and guidance.
Mr. Fiemawhle attributed the indiscipline to the lack of sufficient staff presence, emphasizing the need for more residential infrastructure to support effective student management.
He urged the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to prioritize staff accommodation, highlighting the importance of having adequate staff on campus to maintain discipline and oversight.
“We have 22 of our staff who serve as hall masters and other auxiliary workers. So, it is difficult to manage the students as boarders. If you want to look at the sources for indiscipline, it is because the numbers are not enough to manage the students as boarders.
“I think we should be considering that as part of the priority of the GETFund. For some time now, I haven’t received anything from residential infrastructure,” he stated.
The issue was raised during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, chaired by Peter Nortsu-Kotoe.
The committee acknowledged the staffing gaps across multiple schools and pledged to address the situation.
On his part, Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe recommended that the Minister of Education work with the Minister of Finance to recruit more teachers and auxiliary staff for senior high schools, including Accra Academy.
“We have also seen the shortage of staff in the various schools that we went to. In Accra Academy, with a student population of almost 6,000, they lack staff, and they must be provided with the same.
“So, we recommend to the Minister of Education to fight for clearance from the Minister of Finance so that they can recruit teachers for senior high schools as well as auxiliary staff,” he stated.
