VRA CEO, Deputies Must Resign or Be Sacked If Flooding Recurs - President Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 08 May, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has put the Volta River Authority (VRA) leadership on notice, warning that they will be held accountable for any future flooding disasters similar to the one that occurred in 2023.
During a national address on May 7, Mahama emphasized the importance of implementing measures to prevent such incidents, citing the devastating impact of the previous flooding on downstream communities.
To address this issue, a technical committee led by former VRA CEO Ing. Kirk Koffi was established to investigate the 2023 incident and recommend strategies for mitigation.
The committee's findings include the need for a controlled spill flood plan and downstream engineering solutions to manage flood risks.
“This administration set up a committee chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi, a former VRA CEO. The committee has recommended strategies to prevent future occurrences, including establishing what is called a controlled spill flood plan and implementing downstream engineering solutions for flood management,” Mahama said.
“I have directed that the recommendations be implemented immediately,” he stated.
Mahama has directed that these recommendations be implemented immediately, stressing that the VRA leadership will be responsible for ensuring the effectiveness of these measures.
He warned that if another destructive flooding occurs due to lack of implementation or poor management, the VRA CEO and deputies will face severe consequences, including resignation or dismissal.
“I have further indicated that if they are not properly implemented and another destructive VRA flooding occurs like in 2023, the VRA CEO and deputies must resign or be sacked.''
