Officials Have Been Invited and Questioned Over African Games Scandal - Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 08 May, 2025 - Ghana's President John Mahama has revealed that several officials have been questioned over their involvement in the 2023 African Games scandal.
The Games, which took place in Accra in March 2024, have been marred by allegations of financial mismanagement and potential corruption, with a staggering $245 million reportedly spent on the event.
Additional expenditures included $15 million for athlete and official accommodations and $4.5 million for the games management system and accreditation tags.
Speaking during a briefing on his administration's first 120 days in office, Mahama emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability. "A cornerstone of our commitment to good governance and accountability is tackling corruption and eliminating waste," he stated. Mahama confirmed that investigations into the Games' finances are ongoing, with several officials already invited for questioning.
“I promised to initiate inquiries and forensic audits into several critical matters of public interest.
"This war against corruption continues unabated. A number of officials have been invited and questioned concerning the 13th African Games,'' he added.
Notably, former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was interrogated by the National Investigation Bureau in April, although the specific focus of the questioning remains unclear.
Mahama's administration has vowed to pursue forensic audits into critical matters of public interest, including the African Games expenditure.
