New York - Septemebr 26,2025 - The United States has reversed its visa restrictions on Ghana, allowing Ghanaians to become eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges. This development was announced by Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, after a bilateral meeting with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The US imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and several other countries in July 2025, limiting affected citizens to a maximum three-month single-entry visa. The Trump Administration cited longstanding concerns about visa overstays, particularly by Ghanaian students, as the reason for the restrictions.

Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed his pleasure with the outcome, attributing the success to months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Ghana and the US. "I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations has led to a successful outcome," he said. This reversal is seen as a sign of healthier and stronger Ghana-US relations going forward.

The new visa policy will greatly benefit Ghanaians, especially students and businesspeople who frequently travel to the US. With the five-year multiple-entry visa, Ghanaians will no longer need to renew their visas frequently, making travel and business operations easier.

Many Ghanaians have congratulated the government on this achievement, praising the Minister of Foreign Affairs for his efforts. Some have expressed relief that the restrictions have been lifted, while others have commended the government's diplomatic efforts.
