Unlocking Ghana's Tourism Potential: The Untapped Domestic Market

As Ghana celebrates World Tourism Day 2025, the country's tourism sector is basking in the glory of a remarkable achievement: generating GH¢15.42 billion from international visitors between October 2022 and September 2023. However, beneath the surface of this success lies a pressing concern – the untapped domestic market. Despite the sector's growth, domestic tourism remains constrained, with many Ghanaians unable to afford the high costs of accommodation and travel within their own country.

Ghana's domestic tourism market is ripe for development, but several barriers hinder its growth. High accommodation costs, inadequate infrastructure, and limited accessibility to tourist sites are significant challenges. A night at a regular hotel can cost around ₵700, while budget options range from ₵300 to ₵400, making it difficult for many Ghanaians to plan a short trip, let alone a weekend getaway. Additionally, poor road conditions, traffic congestion, and low average incomes further discourage domestic travel.

Developing the domestic tourism market could have a significant impact on Ghana's economy. It would strengthen supply chains by supporting local businesses and promoting regional development. It would create jobs across various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and crafts. It would also foster national pride by encouraging Ghanaians to explore and appreciate their own cultural heritage and natural beauty.

To unlock the potential of domestic tourism, Ghana can consider developing mid-range hotels that target local travelers, creating tourism packages designed for Ghanaian budgets and preferences, promoting secondary destinations beyond Accra and Cape Coast, and improving infrastructure such as road conditions, tourist site maintenance, and traffic management.

As Ghana celebrates World Tourism Day, it's essential to recognize the importance of balancing international appeal with domestic accessibility. By addressing the challenges and implementing solutions, Ghana can unlock the full potential of its tourism sector, ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the country. With the right approach, Ghana's tourism industry can continue to grow, supporting economic development and promoting cultural exchange.
