UN Appoints Hannah Tetteh as Special Representative for Libya
The United Nations has appointed Ghana's former Foreign Minister, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, as the Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Ms. Tetteh, a seasoned diplomat and politician, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has served in various high-profile positions, including Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa and Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union.
As Ghana's Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2017, Ms. Tetteh played a key role in promoting regional and international cooperation. She also served as Minister for Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2013.
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed confidence in Ms. Tetteh's ability to lead the UN's efforts in Libya. Her appointment is seen as a significant development in the UN's efforts to promote peace and stability in the country.
This announcement was made by the United Nations in Ghana on its Facebook page on Saturday, January 25.
Ms. Tetteh takes over from Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served as Special Envoy and Head of UNSMIL until May 2024.
