US Court Sides with Anas Aremeyaw Anas in Defamation Case, Slaps Kennedy Agyapong with $18M Fine

Essex County, New Jersey, USA - 18 March, 2025 - A United States court has delivered a landmark ruling in favor of Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, ordering former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong to pay $18 million in damages for defamatory statements.

The Essex County Superior Court found that Agyapong's comments during a 2021 interview on The Daddy Fred Show, in which he labeled Anas a "criminal" and a "thief", were false and damaging to Anas' reputation.

The lawsuit stemmed from a September 2021 interview on The Daddy Fred Show, where Agyapong labeled Anas a "criminal" and a "thief." Agyapong also falsely accused Anas of being responsible for the murder of fellow journalist Ahmed Suale and the deaths of multiple Chinese nationals in Ghana. Anas argued that these statements severely damaged his reputation and put his life in danger.

In a dramatic turn of events, Kennedy Agyapong's attempt to downplay his inflammatory comments as mere political rhetoric was flatly rejected by a US court. Instead, the court deemed his statements defamatory, handing Anas Aremeyaw Anas a major victory.

This ruling is especially significant, given that Ghana's Supreme Court had previously dismissed Anas' defamation case against Agyapong.

The US court's decision is a resounding endorsement of Anas' tireless efforts to expose corruption and fight for justice.
