UG Refutes Allegations of Withholding GHS11m Graduation Fee without Medallions

Legon/Accra, Ghana - 18 Feb, 2025 - The University of Ghana has debunked claims on social media that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders.
According to the university, the actual amount collected was GHS7,888,000 from 15,776 graduands who paid GHS500 each.
The graduation fee covers various essential services, including gown rental, congregation publication, graduation medallion, scroll holder, university souvenir, water, and administrative costs. Although the university experienced procurement delays affecting the distribution of medallions and scroll holders, it assured that these items will be made available soon.
The university's Public Affairs Directorate in a statement has urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and rely on official university communications for accurate information.
It reaffirmed the university's commitment to upholding high standards in all its operations, including graduation ceremonies.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information,” portions of the statement read.
