Minority Raises Alarm Over WAEC Debt, Fears Delay in 2024 WASSCE Results

A staggering debt of over 100 million Ghana Cedis owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) by the Ghanaian government has sparked a crisis in the country's educational sector.

The debt, which has been accumulating over time, is having severe implications for the administration of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The opposition in Parliament is now calling for the Finance and Education Ministers to appear before the house to explain the government's inability to settle its debt to WAEC. The Ranking Member of the Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, expressed concern on the floor of parliament over the impact of the debt on education, citing the potential delay in the release of the 2024 WASSCE results.

“Information available is that the target date of 19 December for the release of the 2024 results will have to be delayed because examiners are threatening to hold on to their scripts if payments are not made to them,'' he stated.

“Mr Speaker, in conclusion, I wish to urge you to invite the Ministers for Education and Finance to appear before the house and explain why the government is unable to release funds to release the 2024 WAEC results on the target date of 19 December 2024. So that our children and wards are not denied the opportunity of entering tertiary institutions in January 2025,'' he added.
