UCC Breathes Sigh of Relief as GTEC Restores Services
Cape Coast,Ghana – September 24,2025 - The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has reinstated all services to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) after the institution complied with a directive issued by the regulatory body. The decision comes into effect immediately, following a letter dated September 24, 2025, signed by Jerry Sarfo, Acting Director of Corporate Affairs of GTEC, on behalf of the Director-General.
The controversy began when GTEC directed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of UCC, to proceed on retirement, citing that he had exceeded the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, Prof. Boampong's contract had been extended for two years, sparking a disagreement between the university management and GTEC.
On September 19, 2025, GTEC withdrew all services to UCC, including accreditation processes, government subventions, GETFund support, and research allowances. The sanctions also halted financial clearance for recruitment and post-retirement contracts. However, after UCC provided evidence of compliance with GTEC's directive and Prof. Boampong took the matter to court, the Commission lifted the sanctions.
The restoration of services brings relief to students, lecturers, and administrators who were concerned about the potential disruptions to academic planning and institutional development. With services now restored, UCC can resume normal operations, including accreditation requests, programme approvals, and administrative document processing.
The University of Cape Coast has welcomed the decision, with management expressing gratitude for the opportunity to rectify the issues raised by GTEC.
