Transport Operators to Strike in Protest of roadside trading, traffic violations on May 19

Accra, Ghana - 13 May, 2025 - Commercial transport operators in Ghana are set to embark on a nationwide strike on May 19, 2025, in protest against the government's perceived failure to enforce key provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations Act of 2012.
The operators, represented by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, and the True Drivers Union, argue that the lack of enforcement has led to hazardous road conditions and increased traffic congestion.
At the heart of the issue is Sub-regulation 117 of the Act, which prohibits trading on roads, pavements, and designated bus stops. Despite the clear legislation, authorities have seemingly allowed widespread disregard for the regulation, prompting the transport operators to take action.
According to Samuel Amoah, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, the continuous violation of the law puts drivers and passengers at risk. The union is demanding immediate action from both the Ghana Police Service and the government to address the issue.
"We urge the Ghana Police and the government to enforce the law and take decisive action against traders who flout these regulations," Amoah stated. "It is unfair that transport operators are expected to adhere to strict regulations while traders are allowed to operate with impunity on our roads."
The transport operators have warned that their strike will proceed as planned if no concrete steps are taken to address their concerns. On May 19, 2025, they will park their vehicles in protest, highlighting the need for designated parking spaces and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
