Srem-Sai Defends Attorney General's Powers Amid Minority's Claim of Overstepping Constitutional Authority

Accra, Ghana - 25 March, 2025 - Ghana's Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has defended the Attorney General's involvement in raids, arrests, and investigations into former government officials, dismissing claims that the AG is overstepping his constitutional authority.
The Minority caucus claimed the Attorney General's role is limited to providing legal advice and supporting the courts. However, Dr. Srem-Sai stressed that the Attorney General's powers go beyond advisory duties, encompassing both prosecutorial and investigative functions.
In an interview on the 'Eyewitness News' program on Citi FM on Monday March 24, Dr. Srem-Sai stated that Ghana's legal framework empowers the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute cases, with state-established agencies providing support.
He maintained that the ongoing investigations into former appointees are lawful and within the Attorney General's mandate.
“The institutional structure of the Attorney General should be able to tell anyone interested to know that the AG is the person who investigates, prosecutes, and agencies have been set up by the state and constitutional framework and given those powers to the AG.
“So, anyone who thinks or wants to suggest the AG is a neutral arbiter standing somewhere observing what other people have to do will have to reconsider that position by reading the law carefully. It will be obvious to that person that the argument is not supported by any law,” he added.
