Free SHS has come to stay - Mahama

Ghana's President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to Ghana's Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, a program that has enabled hundreds of thousands of Ghanaian youth to access secondary education since its introduction in 2017.

Mahama's commitment to preserving the Free SHS policy was a cornerstone of his campaign, resonating with Ghanaians who value education access and equity.

In an interview with Voice of America(VOA), Mahama stated that his vision for the program includes securing a reliable funding mechanism to alleviate financial constraints and improve the quality of education.

Despite facing challenges such as overcrowded classrooms and inadequate infrastructure, the Free SHS policy has been a game-changer for Ghana's education sector.

Mahama pledged to work with education stakeholders to review and refine the policy is a welcome development, ensuring sustainable and efficient implementation.

''Free SHS has come to stay, and it is not going anywhere,” Mahama stated. “Nobody is going to scrap Free SHS. What was said was political talk and gimmickry. We are going to maintain it, What we are going to do is get dedicated funding for it,'' he stated.
