Sky Train Saga: Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi Misses Court Hearing Due to Medical Emergency

Accra, Ghana - 21 May, 2025 - The trial of former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairman, Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has been adjourned to May 26 after he failed to appear in court due to alleged ill health.

Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi is standing trial alongside former GIIF CEO, Solomon Asamoah, over a controversial $2 million payment made to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for the development of an urban Skytrain system in Accra, which was never realised.

According to his lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi was rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Tuesday morning due to a medical emergency. The nature of his condition remains unclear, but his legal team has expressed hope for his full recovery and readiness to face trial in due course.

Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi has been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and wilfully causing financial loss to the state. The charges relate to the $2 million payment made in 2019, which allegedly did not yield the intended results.

The case has sparked concerns about financial accountability and governance in Ghana's public institutions. The adjournment of the trial has given Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi's legal team an opportunity to provide further medical evidence to support his absence.

The trial will resume on May 26, where the court is expected to hear further proceedings in the case involving the Accra Sky Train project.
