Sam George Discloses Plan to Shut Down Internet Immediately After Fatal Helicopter Crash
Accra, Ghana – 12 August, 2025 – In a recent interview with Joy FM, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed that shutting down the internet in Ghana was considered to prevent the spread of graphic videos related to the fatal army helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
The incident occurred on August 6, 2025, near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
The minister's decision to consider shutting down the internet stemmed from the rapid spread of disturbing footage on WhatsApp, a platform he described as beyond government control. He expressed concern about the potential impact on the mental health of the victims' families, particularly children, who might stumble upon the graphic content online.
Instead of shutting down the internet, the ministry collaborated with the Cyber Security Authority, Meta (the parent company of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram), and Ghana's telecom operators to limit the circulation of the graphic content. The National Communications Authority (NCA) coordinated with MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo to send over 30 million text messages within two hours, urging the public to stop sharing the images. The telecom companies absorbed the entire cost of the alert.
The minister criticized some traditional media outlets for airing graphic scenes from the crash, describing it as a breach of professional ethics. He emphasized the need for greater sensitivity in reporting tragedies and protecting the dignity of grieving families.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has announced a state funeral for the victims of the helicopter crash, scheduled to take place on August 15, 2025. The ceremony will pay tribute to the high-profile officials and security officers who lost their lives in the disaster.
