TUC Ramps Up Pressure on Government to Act Against Galamsey
Eastern Region, Ghana -October 10,2025 - The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has intensified its call on the government to take decisive action against illegal gold mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that the practice poses a significant threat to Ghana's water bodies and national security. Speaking during a fact-finding visit to the Birim River in the Eastern Region on October 10, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah described galamsey as a "heinous crime" that requires urgent attention.
The TUC has criticized the government's recent stakeholder engagements with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), arguing that such discussions have failed to yield meaningful results. According to Mr. Ansah, the government's actions have been inadequate, and it's time for decisive measures to be taken to curb the menace.
Mr. Ansah also highlighted the country's highly centralized land administration system as a key obstacle in the fight against galamsey. He noted that this system limits the involvement of traditional authorities, who could play a critical role in curbing the menace. "The government must revisit this system and empower traditional leaders to take a more active role in protecting our lands and resources," he emphasized.
The TUC's concerns are underscored by the dire state of Ghana's water bodies. Galamsey activities have polluted several rivers, posing a significant threat to the country's water security. The Kwanyako water treatment plant, which serves several districts, has been shut down due to high turbidity levels caused by galamsey activities.
The TUC has urged President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency to confront the galamsey crisis head-on. Mr. Ansah warned that if the government fails to take decisive action, the TUC will be compelled to take "drastic action" to protect the nation's interests.
The galamsey crisis has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for urgent action to protect the country's natural resources. The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has also weighed in, demanding that the government takes concrete steps to address the issue.
