Reconsider Torkornoo's Suspension, It Sets Poor Precedent - GBA
Accra, Ghana - 30 June, 2025 - The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has renewed its appeal for a review of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing concerns over potential repercussions for the judiciary.
Addressing the 43rd Martyrs' Day commemoration in Accra, GBA President Effua Ghartey warned that the suspension could establish a perilous precedent, undermining the country's legal framework.
The Martyrs' Day ceremony honoured the memory of three High Court judges who were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982. The judges, Justices Frederick Opoku Sarkodie, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, were remembered for their dedication to justice and the rule of law.
Effua Ghartey emphasized the need to protect the independence and integrity of Ghana's judicial system.
"In the spirit of reconciliation, all the various calls made for a reconsideration of the suspension of the Chief Justice in the circumstances, as it sets a poor precedent, will not go unheeded," she said.
"We yearn for peace and strive for peace."
