Railway Revamp: Over 100 Workers Redeployed to Boost Tema-Mpakadan Line
Accra - President John Dramani Mahama has taken a significant step to boost Ghana's rail network by transferring over 100 railway workers from the Western Region to the Tema administrative region. This move aims to strengthen operational capacity and ensure efficient management of the newly inaugurated Tema-Mpakadan railway line.
The redeployment, announced on October 20, 2025, involves various railway staff, including those with operational, maintenance, and logistical duties. The workers will be posted to Tema to help manage the rail line's transition into full operational mode. Retired workers in the Western Region have been assured compensation.
President Mahama's directive is part of Ghana's broader transport modernization agenda, focusing on extending the rail line from Tema Port to the Dawa Industrial Enclave. This project is expected to enhance cargo movement and worker mobility between Tema and the Ashaiman-Dawa area.
During a meeting with organized labor officials led by Trades Union Congress (TUC) Secretary-General Joshua Ansah, President Mahama emphasized the importance of prioritizing the Tema-Port to Dawa line while awaiting the completion of the Mpakadan Inland Port on the Volta Lake.
The transfer also addresses tensions between the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) and the Railway Workers' Union, which had threatened resistance over salary issues. President Mahama assured that the Minister of Finance would be briefed to release allocations for outstanding payments, demonstrating the government's commitment to modernizing Ghana's transport backbone and re-energizing rail operations.
