Cabinet Reverses Akufo-Addo's University Renames
Accra ,October 21,2025 - Cabinet has taken a significant step towards restoring the original names of public universities that were renamed during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The directive, announced by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga in Parliament on October 21, 2025, aims to depoliticize these institutions and promote national identity.
The universities affected by this decision include:
- University of Mines and Technology (UMaT): Previously renamed George Grant University of Mines and Technology
- Wa Campus of University for Development Studies (UDS): Previously renamed Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies
- Navrongo Campus of UDS: Previously renamed C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences
- Ho Technical University: Previously renamed Ephraim Amu Technical University
The renaming exercise under the Akufo-Addo administration was criticized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly honoring figures aligned with a specific political ideology. The current government's decision seeks to reverse this and restore the original names, promoting neutrality and national heritage.
A bill will be presented to Parliament to formalize this decision, and the Ministry of Education has been tasked with preparing the necessary documentation. This move is expected to spark debate among education stakeholders and political observers, but it reflects the government's commitment to preserving the historical integrity of Ghana's academic institutions.
