President Mahama to Launch 'MahamaCares' Today

Accra, Ghana - 29 April, 2025 - In a significant move to alleviate the financial strain on patients with chronic illnesses, President John Dramani Mahama is set to launch the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as "Mahama Cares," later today at the University of Ghana Medical Center.

This initiative aims to provide critical financial support to individuals battling chronic diseases, offering them a lifeline in managing their conditions.

By establishing this fund, President Mahama's administration seeks to reduce the economic burden on families and improve access to quality healthcare services.

President Mahama's healthcare initiative, featuring the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, aims to enhance medical services by upgrading hospitals, prioritizing healthcare, and removing the cap on National Health Insurance Levy funding.

This trust fund specifically targets reducing treatment costs for individuals with chronic illnesses.

 A taskforce, led by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has been established to develop the fund's framework.

The broader healthcare plan includes introducing free primary healthcare at certain levels, expanding health infrastructure, and supporting health workers through initiatives like vehicle tax waivers and PhD scholarships for nurses and allied professionals.

The launch of Mahama Cares is part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana's healthcare system, which has faced challenges in recent years. With many Ghanaians struggling to afford medical treatment, this initiative could bring much-needed relief to thousands of patients and their families.
