Cholera Cases Detected in Three Districts in Ashanti Region

Ashanti Region, Ghana - December 31, 2024 - Ghana's Ashanti Region has become the latest area to be affected by a cholera outbreak, with five confirmed cases reported in three districts. The region's health authorities have swiftly responded to the crisis, implementing emergency measures to contain the spread of the disease.

The affected districts include, Sekyere South District, Kumasi and Bekwai.

The outbreak has raised concerns among health officials, who have noted a significant increase in suspected cholera cases nationwide. Since October 2024, a total of 4,155 suspected cases have been recorded, resulting in 35 fatalities.

In the Ashanti Region, health officials have identified specific areas where the confirmed cases are concentrated. An initial assessment has revealed that the affected individuals did not use public restrooms, suggesting that the outbreak may be linked to contaminated food or water sources.

To combat the spread of the disease, the Regional Health Directorate led by Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng,has launched a series of initiatives, including disinfection and isolation of affected areas, contact tracing, and public health surveillance. The Directorate also launched awareness campaigns and training for healthcare workers to identify and respond to cholera cases effectively.
