President Mahama Faces Lawsuit Over 'Unlawful' Appointment of Anthony Sarpong as GRA Boss

Accra, Ghana - 01 Feb, 2025 - A Ghanaian citizen, Emmanuella Sarfowaah, has taken President John Dramani Mahama to court over his appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The lawsuit alleges that Sarpong's appointment is unlawful due to a conflict of interest, as he is still listed as a senior partner at KPMG, a foreign accounting firm with contracts with the GRA. The plaintiff argues that this violates Ghanaian law and undermines the integrity of the revenue authority.
Sarfowaah is seeking a court order to revoke Sarpong's appointment and prevent him from continuing in the role.
“The plaintiff claims further or in the alternative, a finding that the appointment of the 1st Defendant, a former employee of KPMG and/or a person with an interest in KPMG or a person who had an interest in KPMG until 21st January 2025, by the President of the Republic of Ghana as the Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA is unlawful as it was made in violation of the laws of Ghana.
“An order revoking the appointment of the 1st Defendant, a former employee of KPMG and/or a person with an interest in KPMG or a person who had an interest in KPMG, by the President of the Republic of Ghana as the Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA,'' portions of the suit read.
