Bagbin has Jumped the Gun and his Conduct is Questionable - Kyei Mensah-Bonsu Slams Suspension of MPs

Accra, Ghana - 01, Feb, 2025 - The controversy surrounding the suspension of four Members of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin has intensified, with former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu launching a scathing attack on the Speaker's decision and accusing the Speaker of overstepping his bounds and acting outside the law.
In an interview with Joy News, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu questioned the Speaker's authority to impose the suspension, arguing that it is not backed by the Constitution or the Standing Orders of Parliament.
“The Speaker is right to have availed himself of the imperative of Order 342 of the new Standing Orders,'' he stated.
“Now the question to ask is from where the Speaker is deriving his authority. Neither the Standing Orders nor the Constitution grants the Speaker any of such authority.”
“The Speaker has not only jumped the gun but has gone outside the prescription of the law to impose his sanction. His own attitude and conduct is questionable,” he added.
The suspension was handed down after chaotic scenes erupted during a vetting session on January 30, 2025.
