President Mahama Appoints Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai as New Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO

Accra, Ghana - 23 April, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Abubakar Bawah Abdulai as the new CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital, replacing Dr. Adam Atiku who was dismissed after a controversy over a patient's death.

The patient's death was linked to the unavailability of a functional ventilator at the hospital.

The dismissal of Dr. Atiku followed a heated confrontation with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who had visited the hospital unannounced. A video of the encounter showed a tense exchange between the minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, head of the Accident and Emergency Unit sparking widespread criticism.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association has condemned Dr. Atiku's dismissal, citing a lack of due process and abuse of power. The association has demanded an apology from Minister Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini for their conduct during the visit.

Dr. Abdulai, a senior official at the University for Development Studies, takes over the reins of the hospital at a critical time. The hospital's leadership change comes as the medical community continues to grapple with the implications of Dr. Atiku's dismissal and the government's handling of the healthcare sector.
