Ghana Medical Association Slams Health Minister Over Tamale Hospital CEO Dismissal

Accra, Ghana - 23 April, 2025 - Ghana's medical community is in an uproar after the sudden dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Teaching Hospital, by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The Ghana Medical Association has condemned the move, citing abuse of power and violation of due process.

The controversy began when Minister Akandoh made an unannounced visit to the hospital following the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, who allegedly died due to lack of a functional ventilator. A viral video showed a heated exchange between the minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, head of the Accident and Emergency department.

The GMA has strongly criticized the minister's actions, arguing that the dismissal bypassed standard procedures and contravened natural justice principles. The association demands an unqualified apology from Minister Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini for their treatment of hospital staff.

The GMA also calls for a thorough investigation into the patient's death, following proper procedures to determine the facts and find lasting solutions. The incident has sparked a nationwide debate on ministerial overreach, institutional autonomy, and Ghana's fragile public healthcare system.
