PPP Chairman Calls for Public Access to Government Officials' Asset Declarations

Accra, Ghana - 1 May, 2025 - The Progressive People's Party's National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, has called for reforms to Ghana's asset declaration laws, advocating for public access to declared assets of government appointees.
In an interview on 'The Big Issue' on Channel One TV Owusu emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, criticizing the government's recent extension of the asset declaration deadline for ministers and deputy ministers.
Owusu argued that the current system, which seals declared assets, limits transparency and allows public officials to accumulate wealth without scrutiny. He suggested that asset declarations should be made public, enabling citizens to track changes in officials' wealth and question suspicious transactions.
“I didn’t agree with the extension, from March to May, he should have taken action right away. Because it makes people lax and relaxed about the process,” he said.
“I believe the law should also be reviewed in that regard, because when you declare your assets, it is sealed. You and I cannot see it. It must be a public document, people must be able to apply it as part of the Information Act.
“I should be able to see that when you came into office, you had one house; all of a sudden, you have 10 houses. These things must be questioned, those are things the people are crying about,” he suggested.
The call for reform comes amid controversy over reports that several ministers and deputy ministers from President John Dramani Mahama's administration missed the initial deadline to submit their asset declaration forms.
The government has denied the allegations, accusing media outlets of misreporting.
