Parliament Mourns Loss of Ministers, Others in Helicopter Tragedy

Accra, Ghana – 7 August, 2025 - Parliament has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of eight individuals, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday. The crash occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter was en route to Obuasi.

In a heartfelt statement, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and the leadership of the House extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Republic. The statement read: "Parliament is deeply saddened by this news, and would want to, at this time, express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and indeed the entire Republic."

The Majority Caucus in Parliament, led by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. "It is with a deeply broken heart and profound sorrow that I, on behalf of the Parliamentary Caucus, extend my deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of our colleagues and distinguished patriotic Ghanaians who lost their lives," Ayariga stated.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, also expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident. "Your grief is our grief. We stand in solidarity with the government and the families of our departed colleagues during this moment of profound loss," Afenyo-Markin stated. 

The Minority Caucus called for unity in grief and urged Ghanaians to support national institutions and work together for the country's security and prosperity.
