Every District Will Handle Its Own Sanitation - President Mahama

Dodowa, Greater Accra, Ghana -17 May, 2025 - Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, has revealed plans to decentralize the national sanitation budget, empowering districts to take full responsibility for managing their sanitation needs.
Speaking at a durbar in Dodowa as part of his 'Thank You' tour, President Mahama stated that Cabinet will soon deliberate on the proposed budget, which will make local accountability central to the country's sanitation drive.
Mahama noted that the under the new system, each district will handle its sanitation issues, and cleanliness will become a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
The President emphasized that MMDCEs' performance in maintaining cleanliness will determine their tenure in office.
“Cabinet will soon meet on a decentralisation of the sanitation budget and make every district responsible for its own sanitation,” Mahama stated.
“Cleanliness will become one of the key performance indicators for measuring the performance of MMDCEs and will determine whether they will remain in office or be removed. We will begin to observe the National Sanitation Day programme every month.
President Mahama also announced plans to revive the National Sanitation Day programme, making it a monthly exercise with legal backing and proper funding.
According to him, the programme will be implemented through partnerships between local assemblies and private sector stakeholders, involving all Ghanaians in the effort to improve sanitation.
“This will be a monthly exercise involving all Ghanaians. This time it will not be a symbolic event, it will be legally backed, properly funded, and it will be operationalised through partnerships with local assemblies and private sector providers,” he said.
