Parliament Approves Bill to Reintroduce July 1 as Republic Day, Shift Midweek Holidays to Fridays or Mondays

Accra, Ghana - 26 June, 2025 - Parliament has given its nod to significant changes in Ghana's public holiday calendar with the passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

One of the major changes is the restoration of July 1 as Republic Day, marking the country's transition to a republic in 1960. This move is expected to reignite national pride and reflection on Ghana's history.

Also, a new public holiday has been introduced for the Muslim community, known as Shaqq Day, to be observed on the day after Eid-ul-Fitr. This allows for extended celebration and reflection after the Islamic festival.

The bill also makes significant changes to the commemoration of Founders' Day.

August 4 is being repealed as Founders' Day, and September 21 is being reinstated as Founder's Day to honour Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Furthermore, the bill grants the President the authority to shift public holidays that fall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to either the preceding Friday or following Monday.

Declaring the bill passed onWednesday June 25, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor stated, “Honourable members, the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Amendment Bill 2025 is duly read the third time and passed.”
