Govt to Hire 50,000 Teachers, 10,000 Non-Teaching Staff in 2025 - Education Minister
Accra, Ghana - 26 June, 2025 - The Ghanaian government is set to embark on a massive recruitment drive in the education sector, with plans to hire 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025.
This was announced by Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, while addressing Parliament on Wednesday, June 25.
According to the Minister, adequate provisions have been made in the 2025 national budget to support the recruitment exercise. The move is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes across the country.
The announcement comes on the heels of concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of teachers who recently picketed at the Ghana Education Service (GES) premises. However, Minister Iddrisu dismissed these claims, assuring the House that the government is committed to resolving outstanding posting issues and ensuring that recruits are deployed to improve learning outcomes.
The Minister also provided an update on the posting of newly recruited teachers, explaining that clearance had been received in May, but had since expired.
He assured that a renewed clearance is being processed, and the recruitment process will proceed.
“This morning, I met with Bafour Eric, and I will soon share the details with the public. We discussed the matter, and he indicated to me that clearance was received in May. They were expected to start work in August but began in September.
“Naturally, by December 31, the clearance issued by the Finance Ministry had expired, and they can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which is what I am currently awaiting. Let them be assured.
“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” he said.
