Omane Boamah Pledges to Address Regional Imbalance in Military Recruitment
Accra, Ghana - 28 Jan, 2025 - Defence Minister-designate, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has vowed to address geographical disparities in the recruitment process for the Ghana Armed Forces and other security services.
Speaking before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Jan 28, Dr. Omane Boamah acknowledged that potential recruits in Accra have an unfair advantage due to the proximity of 37 Military Hospital. He vowed to explore measures to make medical assessments and recruitment procedures more accessible to candidates across all regions.
He also stressed that the military must reflect the diversity of the nation, ensuring regional balance and promoting national unity.
Dr. Omane Boamah advised Ghanaians to avoid seeking enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces if they do not meet the requisite qualifications, citing the risks and challenges associated with military training.
“I’m a student of equity and we will ensure that all the principles of equity are applied to the procedures that the recruitment process follows. For example, if somebody is in the Upper West region, and the person is going to be enlisted or recruited. How does the person go through medicals? If somebody is in the Upper East, same.
“If somebody is in Accra, obviously the person may have a certain advantage. 37 Military Hospital is just right here. And so, we will look at all the equity principles to ensure that regional balance is attained,'' he stated.
