Obuasi, Ghana - 20 Jan, 2025 - Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kweku Kwarteng has expressed concerns and called for probe into the violent confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel that left seven people dead on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at a mine in Obuasi.
A group of approximately 60 illegal miners, armed with various weapons, breached the security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area of the mine. They opened fire on military personnel when confronted, resulting in the fatalities.
In a statement, Mr. Kwarteng emphasized the need for accountability and justice, stating that he has contacted the police commands and is confident that the Military Command is reviewing the incident.
He urged the government to expedite the investigative process, ensuring that the law takes its course and justice prevails.
“I have contacted both the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command who have given assurances that investigations are being conducted into the unfortunate loss of lives and injuries to others,'' he stated.
“I am confident the Military Command is also reviewing the incident to uncover the details of the build-up to the unfortunate event and what exactly took place at the scene of the encounter.”
“It is my expectation that our security agencies would put the findings of their reviews and investigations before His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama,” he added.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has already ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly clashes. The incident has sparked concerns over the security situation in the region and the need for swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
