Nzema East Assembly Destroys Galamsey Equipment, Arrests 20

Nzema, Western Region - 16 June, 2025 - The Nzema East Municipal Security Council Taskforce, led by Municipal Chief Executive Hon Herbert Kuah Dickson, has launched a major crackdown on illegal mining activities in the area.
The operation, which was carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Investigation Bureau, and the Blue Water Guard team, resulted in the arrest of 20 individuals and the seizure of several equipment.
The targeted areas included Akango, Abelebo, and Duale, all located along the River Ankobra. The taskforce confiscated six control boards of excavators, 35 chamfan machines, and several dredge boats, which were subsequently destroyed.
According to Hon Kuah Dickson, the Municipal Assembly is determined to protect the area's water bodies and forest zones from destruction. He warned individuals and groups involved in illegal mining to desist from such activities, emphasizing that the assembly is committed to clamping down on perpetrators.
The MCE in a press release, also urged traditional leaders and opinion leaders to refrain from allowing their lands to be used for illegal mining activities, particularly in sensitive areas such as the deep forest zones and along river bodies. "We are committed to ensuring our water bodies and forest areas are maintained devoid of pollution and destruction by recalcitrant people," he stressed.
This operation is part of the assembly's efforts to curb the menace of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which has been wreaking havoc on the environment and water resources in the area.
