Bantama ,Kumasi - Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a clarion call to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritize unity and avoid personal attacks as the party's flagbearer race intensifies. Speaking at the commissioning of a new NPP constituency office in Bantama, Kufuor emphasized that the party's future success depends on its ability to stay united, even in the face of internal competition.

Kufuor cautioned that while competition is natural in politics, it must be conducted with respect and a focus on unity. He lamented the harsh words being exchanged among candidates and their supporters, noting that such behavior could ultimately harm the party's prospects. "Siblings fight for power, but it's an abomination for one to take power and completely push the other aside," he said.

The former president urged party hopefuls to campaign with care, avoiding language that could divide the party. He also highlighted the potential for supporters to take things too far, sometimes without the candidate's knowledge. "Sometimes, too, the candidates may have no idea—it may simply be people around them picking on the other candidate," Kufuor noted.

Kufuor's comments come on the heels of similar sentiments expressed by other party bigwigs, including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who urged NPP supporters to refrain from attacking party leaders on social media. The call for unity is seen as crucial in the lead-up to the 2028 general elections, where the NPP hopes to reclaim power. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has also expressed optimism about the party's chances, citing the legacy of governance under his leadership and that of Kufuor.

Akufo-Addo at the same event emphasized that the NPP's future success depends on its ability to stay united and focused on its core values. "The work the NPP did during my time and during former President Kufuor's time is enormous, and it is that legacy we will build on to win back power in 2028," he said. With the party's flagbearer race underway, Kufuor's words of caution serve as a timely reminder of the importance of unity in achieving the party's goals.
