Mahama Unhappy with Chief Justice's Handling of Leaked Letter, Sets 10-Day Deadline
Accra, Ghana - 29 March, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has given Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo a 10-day ultimatum to respond to three petitions seeking her removal, while also expressing disappointment over a leaked letter from Torkornoo that made its way to social media before he could review it.
This move follows Torkonoo's formal request for copies of the petitions, which have sparked intense debate within legal and political circles.
The petitions, submitted by individuals questioning Torkonoo's conduct and suitability to continue as Chief Justice, have set the stage for a high-stakes legal and constitutional battle. With the 10-day deadline looming, Torkonoo must swiftly present her case to avoid further proceedings that could determine her future in office.
President John Mahama expressed disappointment that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo's letter, dated March 27, 2025, was widely shared on social media before it reached his desk, despite being addressed to him.
This concern was outlined in an official letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
“His Excellency, however, notes with disappointment that your letter of 27th March 2025 addressed to him was circulating on social media even before he could review its contents. The letter was reportedly shared as an attachment to another letter you wrote to the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges and the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).”
“Accordingly, you are respectfully requested to submit your preliminary response to the petitions within ten (10) days of receipt of this letter to facilitate further consultation between His Excellency and the Council of State,'' the statement read.
The Chief Justice's response will be crucial in shaping the next steps, including whether a formal inquiry into the petitions will be initiated.
