NPP sympathizers lead attacks on Journalists - GJA sounds alarm
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) reports 13 violent attacks on journalists and media organizations between January and October. Sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party were implicated in three cases, with unknown assailants responsible for another three.
Some of the disturbing incidents include:
- Gunpoint Attack: Joy FM's Erastus Asare Donkor was attacked in October, allegedly by operatives associated with Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited.
- Petrol Bomb Attack: Class FM was targeted in April.
- Cyberattack: The Fourth Estate, an investigative platform, was taken down after reporting on corruption at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.
A statement issued by the GJA on occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists highlights the increased risk for journalists.
“We demand justice for these victims and urge law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators face appropriate penalties for their crimes,” the GJA statement asserted.
The association calls for additional security for media workers covering sensitive issues.
