Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital staff protest pedestrian knockdowns

Akwapim-Mampong, Eastern Region - Workers at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital staged a demonstration on Friday, November 1, 2024, to draw attention to the alarming rate of pedestrian knockdowns and fatalities on the Accra-Koforidua and Adukrom road.

The protest follows the tragic death of midwife Ruth Nartey, who was knocked down by a speeding vehicle in front of the hospital on Wednesday, October 30. This incident brings the total number of pedestrian fatalities to three this year, with another victim still recovering from injuries.

Hospital staff are demanding action from authorities to address the lack of speed ramps and pedestrian safety measures on the road. They presented a petition to the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, proposing solutions including:

1. Construction of speed ramps
2. Pedestrian crosswalks and signage
3. Road markings and reflective lights
4. Speed limit signage

The staff threatened a sit-down strike if their concerns are not addressed. In their petition, they urged the Municipal Chief Executive, Eastern Regional Minister, and Department of Highways Authority to act promptly, stating:"We are confident that your immediate attention to this petition will help save lives and prevent further injuries along this hazardous stretch of road. Thank you for considering this critical safety request. We look forward to your swift action to avert further preventable tragedies."

SAFETY MEASURES DEMANDED TO PREVENT FURTHER TRAGEDIES

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association and hospital staff believe implementing these measures will reduce fatalities and injuries, enhance public trust and safety, and alleviate the burden on medical staff and resources.
