NPP Rejects Electoral Commission's Decision to Rerun Ablekuma North Elections

Accra, Ghana - 2 July, 2025 -The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

According to Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, the party will not comply with the EC's directive, citing a court ruling that instructed the commission to complete the collation process rather than conduct a rerun.

The EC announced on July 2, 2025, that the rerun would take place on July 11, 2025, following a meeting with representatives from both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). However, the NPP claims it has not received official notice regarding the rerun and accuses the NDC of coercing the EC into making this decision.

In a statement, Haruna Mohammed described the EC's announcement as "bogus" and emphasized that the party's position is backed by a court ruling.

He stated that the NPP would not participate in the rerun, which is scheduled for July 11, 2025.

He added that the Party's General Secretary, Lawyer Justin Kodua is set to address the press on July 3, 2025, to further elucidate the party's stance.

''The NPP has rejected the rerun of elections in the 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North. Lawyer Justin Kodua will address the press tomorrow'' he said.

The Ablekuma North constituency has been without a Member of Parliament for over six months due to disputes surrounding the outcome of the parliamentary vote. The NPP insists that its candidate, Akua Afriyie, won the election with a margin of 349 votes and sees no justification for a rerun.

In contrast, the NDC has been pushing for a rerun in the disputed polling stations, citing unresolved discrepancies and demanding transparency and accountability from the EC.
