NPP 2028 Flagbearer Race Heats Up: Adutwum Declares Interest

Accra, Ghana - 19 June, 2025 - Ghana's ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for a crucial leadership contest, with another high-profile figure throwing his hat into the ring. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister, has announced his intention to run for the party's flagbearer position in the 2028 election.

Dr. Adutwum's decision comes as the party prepares for a fiercely contested presidential primary, scheduled for January 2026. The outcome of this contest will determine the NPP's standard-bearer for the 2028 general elections, a poll that could shape the country's future trajectory.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated on facebook.

The former minister's bid is significant, given his reputation for driving reforms in the education sector during his tenure. Dr. Adutwum's decision to join the flagbearer race is seen as a bold move, as he will be going up against some stiff competition, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is widely regarded as a frontrunner.

Other influential NPP figures, such as Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, are also rumored to be considering bids for the flagbearer position.
