NLC Directs GHA Workers to Call Off Strike Over National Roads Authority Act
Accra, Ghana - Nov 12, 2024 - The National Labour Commission (NLC) has intervened in the ongoing strike by Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) workers, directing them to suspend their industrial action effective immediately. This comes after the workers began their indefinite strike today, November 12, 2024, in protest against the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).
At the core of the dispute is the workers' concern that the Act will erode GHA's autonomy and create bureaucratic inefficiencies through its proposed merger with the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads. The workers are also calling for the removal of two key officials: Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, CEO of the National Roads Authority (NRA), citing their alleged complicity in decisions threatening the roads sector's integrity.
The NLC's directive follows a formal petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging broader consultations before implementing the new Act. In its statement, the NLC emphasized the need for GHA workers to suspend their strike while negotiations continue, noting that the workers failed to follow due process under the Labour Act, 2023 (Act 651)
