Vacant Parliamentary Seats: Yeboah Dame backs Supreme Court decision
Accra, Ghana - Nov 12, 2024 - Ghana's Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame is championing the rule of law following a landmark Supreme Court ruling.
This remarks follows the Supreme Court's ruling where the Court overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin's decision to declare four seats vacant, following a challenge by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
In a landmark 5-2 majority ruling, a seven-member panel led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo sided with Afenyo-Markin on November 12. A detailed explanation of the ruling is expected on November 13.
Speaking to journalists Dame stressed that respecting the court's decision is vital for Ghana's democracy. ''Whenever the court speaks, it's a clear and emphatic order... that decision must be respected," he stated. Failure to comply could undermine democracy and societal stability.
He praised the Supreme Court for intervening, ensuring the democratic process remains intact.
"It's very important the Supreme Court ruled on this matter... necessary for the Court to conclude this matter," he added.
