NDC's Bernard Bediako Takes Early Lead in Akwatia By-Election

Akwatia,Ghana - September 2,2025 - The Akwatia constituency in Ghana's Eastern Region has witnessed a significant development in the ongoing by-election, with National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Bernard Bediako taking an early lead. According to provisional results from the NDC's internal collation system, Bediako has polled 14,354 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 12,144 votes.

This comes after a poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between August 27 and 28 suggested that Bediako would emerge victorious, with 43.8% of voter support. Another poll indicated that Bediako held a comfortable lead over Asumadu, with 47% to 53% of the votes in the likely voters model.

The Akwatia by-election became necessary following the demise of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away due to heart complications in July 2025. 

NDC's Bernard Bediako Baidoo ,a lawyer and long-serving Akwatia Constituency Secretary for the NDC. Bediako won the NDC primary on August 4, 2025, with 380 votes, defeating Erasmus Koney Ali and former MP Henry Yiadom Boakye.
