NPP's "Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna" Demo Rocks Accra
Accra ,Ghana - September 23,2025 - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a major demonstration in Accra, dubbed "Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna" (We Resist Fear), to protest what they describe as systematic harassment and intimidation of its members by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. Hundreds of party supporters and sympathizers gathered at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, marking the beginning of the protest.
The demonstration is a response to recent arrests and detentions of prominent NPP figures, including Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi. The party claims these actions are part of a broader pattern of politically motivated prosecutions and selective justice under the Mahama administration.
NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha emphasized that the protest aims to draw attention to the government's alleged abuse of power and selective application of justice. The party is demanding equal treatment before the law for opposition figures and an end to what they describe as state-sponsored harassment. Mustapha accused the government of reintroducing a "culture of silence" and exhibiting authoritarian tendencies, which he claims are eroding Ghana's democratic foundations.
The demonstration began at 6:00 a.m. from Obra Spot, proceeding to the Police Headquarters to present a petition to the Inspector General of Police and National Security. The march will then continue to the Jubilee House, where a final petition will be delivered to the Office of the President. Senior party leaders, including the Minority Leader and the entire minority caucus, are expected to join the youth wing in presenting the petitions.
Government officials have yet to respond comprehensively to the NPP's allegations, although the Ghana Police Service has maintained that all arrests follow due process and are based on specific legal violations rather than political considerations.
The protest highlights growing tensions between Ghana's major political parties, with the NPP positioning itself as a defender of democratic freedoms against alleged government overreach.
