NADMO to Inspect Old Buildings Across Ghana After Cape Coast Tragedy
Cape Coast, Central Region - 28 June, 2025 - Ghana's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is set to launch a nationwide exercise to assess the structural integrity of old buildings across the country. This decision comes in the wake of a devastating building collapse in Cape Coast, Central Region, which claimed several lives.
According to Richard Amo Yartey, Director of NADMO's Inspectorate Unit, the organisation will conduct a thorough assessment of old structures that have not undergone maintenance in years. The aim is to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in other parts of the country.
Yartey emphasized that the recent collapse in Cape Coast serves as a wake-up call for NADMO to take proactive measures.
“Across the country, we don’t have structures collapsing all over the country. But then, this is an eye-opener, a wake-up call for us to start doing some assessment on very old structures which have not seen maintenance for a very long while,'' he said in an interview with Citi News.

Meanwhile, the Central Region is grappling with severe flooding, which has affected over 5,000 people and displaced 124 others due to collapsed buildings in Cape Coast. The number of municipalities affected by flooding in the region has risen from 11 to 14, with newly affected areas including districts where illegal mining is prevalent.
