Minority Blasts Govt for Failing to Speak Out Against Viral LGBTQ+ Video

Accra, Ghana - 28 June, 2025 - Ghana's parliament has been rocked by controversy after a viral video surfaced showing two men allegedly celebrating their same-sex relationship at the country's Independence Square. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and reignited debates around LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Deputy Minority Whip, Iddrisu Habib, has criticized the government for its silence on the matter, questioning its stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Habib expressed disappointment that the government has not taken a stronger stance against the perceived promotion of LGBTQ+ activities.

“I want to assure our colleagues on the other side that we’re disappointed our first attempt to outlaw the LGBTQ community in Ghana did not yield results. If it did, perhaps the Independence Square kissing they are talking about would have been considered unlawful, and the people would have been arrested and punished,” Suhuyini noted. “But that notwithstanding, we are ready to consider the Bill whenever and however it is introduced in the House,'' he said on the floor of parliament on Friday June 27.

Meanwhile, Alhassan Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North, recognized the public's worry and stressed that Parliament would take firm action when the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is reintroduced to the House.

“But that notwithstanding, we are ready to consider the Bill whenever and however it is introduced in the House.”

Ghana's LGBTQ+ community has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years, with many activists expressing concerns about the country's human rights record. The upcoming vote on the bill is expected to have significant implications for the community and the country's international reputation.
